    Time of Croesus (?).

    Electrum Stater.
Av.: Foreparts of lion and bull, in opposite directions and joined by their necks.
Rv.: Three oblong incuse sinkings, with geometrical figures.
    14,09 g.

Ref.: Head, Coinage of Lydia and Persia, pl.I,6. Kraay-Hirmer 590.

    BoC: 19/1, 1994, p.5.

FAKE – The electrum of this counterfeit is very yellow, the execution stiff and without a feeling for the style of the period, juste note the way the foreparts are joined. The reverse punches are reminiscent of the reverses of some extremely spurious electrum staters which were allegedly found in the Clazomenae excavations, see the review in SNR 72, 1993, pp. 201-207.
For this type of counterfeit see also BoC 17/2, 1992/3, p. 12.
