ANCIENT – Greek BOEOTIA Thebes Metal: Silver Denomination: Stater 12.15g, 21 mm Boiotian shield / Female figure (Harmonia?), wearing long chiton, seated right, holding crested Corinthian helmet in her left hand, right hand on her hip, left foot resting on a footstool, (archaic Q)EBA upward on left, all within square incuse. For comps see Head, Boeotia p. 32, pl. II, 10 = BMC p. 72, 42, pl. XII, 10 = Traité III 233, pl. CC, 2, Myron Hoard pl. A, 31, SNG Manchester 921. Fabric of the flan is wrong, design of the shield is wrong, design on reverse does not hold up to the original. See CNG, Triton IX, BCD Boiotia (10 January 2006), lot 417 for an original. This piece was shown to BCD who confirmed it was an older counterfeit, possibly an Orphanides, who operated from the 1930-1960’s.
