The International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN) conducted its 74th annual Congress on the occasion of the Association’s 75th Anniversary. The Congress took place in Rome, Italy from May 21to May 24, 2026. Sixty-three member firms attended the event, held at the luxurious Parco dei Principi Grand Hotel and Spa.
A public roundtable about the future of numismatics with Italian government officials and press in attendance inaugurated the event.
A beautiful medal created by noted Italian sculptor Chiara Principe to commemorate IAPN’s 75th Anniversary was distributed to both dignitaries and IAPN members attending the event.
Following that public session, IAPN members gathered in private to conduct Association business in a General Assembly.
The General Assembly approved membership for four numismatic firms:
(1) Coin Archives LLC (USA);
(2) Jassal Group Numismatics (USA);
(3) Numisma (Panama);
(4) Trigometric (Malaysia).
A moment of silence was held for recently deceased IAPN members. These included George Frederick Kolbe, Annette Guyonnet-Vinchon, Bill Rosenblum, and Herbert Lewis Kreindler.
Assembly delegates received briefings on regulatory challenges facing the industry as well as recent US tariffs.
The Assembly voted to approve Hong Kong as the location of its 75th Congress in 2027. The delegates then heard proposals to hold subsequent Congresses in Kentucky (USA), Washington, DC (USA), and Buenos Aires, (Argentina).
Since 1982, IAPN has annually conducted its book prize award honoring numismatic authors for what the organization considers “the best numismatic publication of the year”. This year 27 books were entered for the Prize, 4 from Asia, 16 from Europe and 7 from North America.
The clear winner, with 92 points, was Stefano Bertuzzi, for his 3-volume magnum opus, Corpus Numismatum Omnium Romanorum Pontificum: Pio IX nelle medaglie, nelle croci capitolari e nella faleristica [Corpus Numismatum Omnium Romanorum Pontificum: Pius IX in medals, capitular crosses and phaleristics], published by Edizioni D’Andrea in Rome.
In second place, with 41 points, was Daniel Sedwick, for Arce’s Doubloons: A die study of the Colombian gold cob coinage of assayer Arce in the name of Charles II, 1692-1714, published by Sedwick & Associates, Winter Park, FL. In third place, with 39 points, was Sir Mark Jones, for William Wyon, published by Spink in London.
Umberto Moruzzi and Moruzzi Numismatics organized both the Roundtable, the Congress and activities that included tours to Ostia, the Port of Trajan and the Italian Mint Museum as well as a Gala at a former Papal Summer residence, the Villa Mondragone.
At the Gala dinner, Umberto Moruzzi received IAPN’s highest award, the Forrier Medal, from IAPN’s president, Dan Sedwick, for his work in organizing the Congress.
Signor Bertuzzi, an architect by profession living in Rome, received the applause of IAPN delegates at a gala dinner. He will be presented with his Prize, CHF 1,000, a named medal and a diploma, at a ceremony to be held in Rome later this year.
A total of € 6,300 in cash was also collected for the Community of Sant'Egidio a worldwide Catholic lay association founded in Rome in 1968.
